My name is Sophie Glasgow and I'm a portrait photographer based in Kansas. Now booking photoshoots in Wichita, Kansas City, Manhattan, and Lawerence, Kansas.
While this isn’t necessarily directly related to photoshoots as most of my blogs are, I wanted to write a little piece for other WFH girlies and the students I shoot all the time. I am someone who doesn’t really focus great at home, so I often find myself looking for free wifi and fire latte and a snack. I also just did a photoshoot at Larcher’s so this is also partially inspired by that lol. So here’s a list of my favorite coffee shops, bars, and public spaces in Wichita, Kansas to set up my laptop and get some work done.
The Cocoa Dolce downtown on St. Francis hates to see me coming. Mostly because I can spend like six hours at a time there. They aren’t usually very crowded during the week and they have several really comfy spots with outlets. The space is sort of giving cozy industrial and they have a huge window where you can look into the chocolate factory part of the building. Their coffee isn’t my favorite in town, but they make a nice hot latte (for some reason their iced lattes don’t do it for me). If I’m not feeling coffee, they also have a couple smoothie options and some cocktails and wine. As for food, it’s pretty much all pastries, chocolate, and gelato, which is fine, but if I’m hanging someplace for a while, it’s nice to be able to grab real lunch. They are open till 7 during the week and 10 on the weekends which isn’t the case for most coffee shops.
Larcher’s Market is located in my favorite place in the world (College Hill) which is of course an immediate plus. You can also stop by the Scientology lecture next door after you grab your coffee! Just kidding. But like it is an option. You do you babe.
Larcher’s has a ton of comfy spots to sit and a little patio bar when the weather is nice. They have a really cute sort of retro vibe inside and the cutest bathroom of all time (random). Their Morning Delight Latte is my favorite, hot or iced. They also have a great breakfast and lunch menu, along with pastries and dessert. If you’re not feeling coffee they do have cocktails, beer, and wine as well. Their cocktail menu is not my favorite, so if I’m craving one, I usually work at Larcher’s for a few hours and then reward myself with a cocktail at their sister restaurant next door, Belmont. The one thing I don’t love, is that Larcher’s turns into a pop up bar during the Holiday season which is fun, but if you’re trying to study or get some work done, the insane amount of Christmas decorations is overstimulating AF.
Central Standard Brewing is not only my favorite brewery in town, but also one of my favorite spots to edit. This is a 21+ spot obviously, but it’s great for when I want to get some work done, but not feeling a coffee. They also randomly have really great chips and salsa. They have several comfy spots to set up at and a great patio when it’s warm out. If I’m trying to work, I usually find that it’s best to go during the week right when they open at 3.
Coffee Daze is another College Hill favorite. They probably make my favorite coffee along with the best avocado toast in town (try the Everything Toast!). I usually pick something from their seasonal menu or get the Morning Honey Latte. They also have smoothies which is nice, along with pastries and a few sandwich options. Coffee Daze is my favorite for coffee and toast, but I honestly don’t go as much as I would like because the parking situation isn’t great (I like to walk there, so it’s not the biggest deal), it’s always crowded (again, great for them, not for me) and they have like 3 comfy spots. They have three spots that have booth seats and the rest are just tables with not the most comfortable chairs. They do have a couch with a couple comfy chairs, but if I’m eating for working on a laptop, I don’t love that spot. If I’m going to a coffee shop, I’m usually spending a couple hours there, so comfort is key.
Another 21+ option. Mort’s is one of my favorite places in general, but I’ve gone several times during the week around when they open and pop open my iPad to do some editing with a martini to sip on.
The library is great because not only do you not have to buy anything to hangout there, they have a ton of great workspaces with outlets and room to spread out.
Greater Grounds is a newer coffee shop in town, and it’s already popping off. The first couple times I went, it was pretty dead, but the word got out and now they’re packed every time I go (great for them, not so great for me when I want to find a good spot to sit). It’s super cute inside with these big faux olive trees and a bunch of cute cozy love seats and chairs. They also have a bar top with a bunch of seats and a couple bigger work tables if you’re coming with a study group. I usually go with a hot latte there (iced is a no go), and they also have pastries and crepes which I have not tried, but sound fire. They do have a cocktail menu as well and I believe they have live music some evenings which is fun.
The Hideout is great if you want a brewski or a cocktail and to get some work done. The patio even has some outlets here and there if you’re looking for wifi, a power source, and some fresh air. I personally do not get much work done here because I’ve worked there for a long time and will get distracted talking to people and get nothing done lol. If you’re bringing your laptop to work, I definitely recommend going when the Hideout opens around 5 on weekdays or early Saturday afternoon.
Reverie is just down the road from College Hill and has some of the best coffee in town, along with several comfy spots inside. Unfortunately it is right next to East High School, so I find that if you go at the wrong time, it’s usually packed with high schoolers. It’s also kind of dark in there which is sometimes the vibe I want, but sometimes not and it will put me to sleep lol.
Recently I found myself spending hours at some of these workplaces and I felt like I needed someplace I could focus for longer periods of time. I discovered The Commerce Club, which is a co-working space located downtown. It costs $75 a month to be a member but it’s open like 7 AM to 11 PM every day of the work and they have a ton of cozy spots to spread out and get some work done. Even if it wasn’t something you think you’d need year round, you could always get the membership during your busiest months to get a change of atmosphere.
